
Many years ago, when I was working as a television camera operator with the University of Sydney, we produced several programs for a Sunday morning show on Channel 7. The show was called ‘Television Tutorial’. One show featured Barbara Thiering, a biblical scholar, who was producing some controversial theories on the life of Christ.
Barbara suggested that the entire episode of the coming of Christ, and the life of the God man on earth, took place within an isolated Essene community. Further she asserted that he didn’t rise from the dead, but was drugged and later revived. This theorising lead me to read her book,
The Qumran origins of the Christian Church.
Barbara Thiering’s denial of Christ’s resurrection is a controversial theory that has been widely criticised by scholars and theologians. There are several reasons why her conclusion is improbable.
The Pesher Technique
When I first read Thiering’s book I was surprised that she adopted what is termed, the “pesher” technique. This technique for reading biblical texts assumes they are coded with secret messages and that these confirmed her theories. There is little evidence to support use of the “pesher” technique by the Essenes, or in biblical texts. So, her claims are largely speculative, and lack credibility.
Inconsistency with the Gospel Accounts.
Thiering argues that Jesus didn’t rise from the dead but was taken down from the cross and secretly revived. This presupposes a group other than the Apostles that conspired to engage in this subterfuge. This is inconsistent with the biblical accounts. Here are the biblical accounts from the

Thiering suggests Jesus didn’t die
Thiering asserts that Joseph learned about drugs while the Holy family was in Egypt and goes on to suggest, providing no direct evidence to support her theory, that Jesus was drugged and did not die on the cross. She argues that Jesus was taken down from the cross and revived by his disciples. This is at variance with the recorded behaviour of the disciples following the
Crucifixion, as described in the Gospel accounts. Her theory has been criticised by many scholars for its lack of historical and textual evidence, and for its reliance on a highly speculative and subjective interpretation of biblical texts. Thiering’s theory is an interesting and thought-provoking interpretation of biblical texts, but it lacks historical and scholarly support and contradicts the accounts of Christ’s resurrection found in the Gospels. As a result, her conclusion that Christ’s resurrection did not occur is improbable.
Medical commentary further undermines such theories as Thiering’s
Medical authorities W. D. Edwards, W. J. Gabel and F. E. Hosmer offered the following analysis in regard to the New Testament Greek and the medical data:
Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock, as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion, his wrists were nailed to the patibulum and, after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post (stipes), his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus’ death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier’s spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross.
